Culture X Music

Taitung is just like its own little paradise, separated from the outside world by the mountains and the sea. Early inhabitants, such as the Amis tribe, the Bunun tribe, the Rukai tribe, the Paiwan tribe and the Yami tribe as well as later immigrants, all have contributed to the current diverse cultural landscape of Taitung.

Indigenous groups in Taitung have developed a distinctive music culture over the years. For example, Bunun rituals are notoriously complicated. This gave rise to their signature eight-part harmony, called “pasibutbut” in Bunun, to please the gods and pray for a bountiful harvest. This type of multipart harmony sung at the Harvest Festival was invented by the Bunun of Wulu Village. It is the first of this kind of singing to become world famous.
